MU'S IN THE NEWS

March 29, 2002 – Eyeglasses needed

(STORRS, CT) Unite for Sight and Mu Sigma Upsilon sorority are holding a "Donate Your Eyes" eyeglasses drive.

MSU is a multicultural service organization dedicated to uniting women of all cultures.

UFS is a nonprofit organization founded by Jennifer Staple, who is an undergraduate at Yale University.

Both groups are hoping to collect eyeglasses to be donated to patients who cannot afford them.

"The more eyeglasses [we get], the more people we can reach," Staple said.

Statistics show that 80 percent of all blindness is preventable.

"Many people with sight problems, if they even receive medical care, are not able to pay for glasses," Staple said.

Staple has dedicated her time to educating people about eye diseases and exams.

Yale University's drive has been ongoing for two years. So far they have collected over 800 pairs of glasses.

Between Yale, UConn and a High School in Branford, Conn., Staple hopes to give people a chance to show their support for those less fortunate.
The bins will be located at the African American Cultural Center, the Asian American Cultural Center, the Puerto Rican-Latin American Cultural Center and the Co-op.

Prescription glasses and non UV-protected sunglasses are welcomed.
"People usually throw their old glasses out," said Michelle Salacan the president of the Concordia Chapter of MSU. "This will be a good way for them to put the glasses to good use."

The eyeglasses will be donated to places such as Africa, through the aid of REMEDY, a humanitarian organization that collects and delivers supplies to developing countries

Staple also urges anyone interested in learning about and setting up vision screening and education sessions at UConn to contact her at jennifer.staple@yale.edu, or go to the UFS Webpage, www.uniteforsight.org.
