November 1, 2005 – NMGC Takes a Stand For Unity Within the
Multicultural Greek Community
(TAMPA, FL) The National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC) announced
today the adoption of a new Code of Ethics to serve as an example to
the general Greek-letter community.
The NMGC is the collaboration of numerous fraternities and sororities
seeking to unify and breathe new life and meaning into the concept of
Multicultural Greek-Letter Organizations (MGLOs). While officially established
as of October 25, 2003, the founding organizations have been involved
with the research, conception and creation of the NMGC for a number
of years. Since 1998, MGLOs have come together to fashion a new standard
by which Multicultural fraternities and sororities would interact with
one another, their respective colleges and university campuses, and
the community at large.
A historic moment occurred at the NMGC’s October 2005 conference
in Tampa, Florida: the representatives from the NMGC’s 11 organizations
met and ratified a first in the ethnic Greek community, the NMGC Code
of Ethics. This Code of Ethics, in its tender simplicity, embodies some
of the core principles of the NMGC, which is unity and collaboration
of all efforts in the Multi-Cultural Greek community. In this singularly
unique document, the member organizations of the NMGC stood together
and spoke aloud in one voice that dissent, discord and disharmony will
not be tolerated nor welcomed in the Multi-Cultural Greek community.
“We are only as strong as our weakest link, and our national harmony
would mean nothing without a similar unity on all levels where Multi-Cultural
fraternities and sororities come together,” said Denise Pipersburgh,
NMGC President. In this Code of Ethics, the national council affirmatively
gives "bite" to its founding principles and mission statement:
• To provide a forum that allows for the free exchange of ideas,
programs, and services between its constituent fraternities and sororities;
• To promote the awareness of multicultural diversity within collegiate
institutions, their surrounding communities, and the greater community-at-large;
and
• To support and promote the works of its member organizations.
“I am filled with pride as I look forward to the continued accomplishments
of our member organizations as multiculturalism is no longer the word
branded around for effect, but rather denotes a specific core of principles
and ideology accepted and truly embraced by all. So I say to you all,
let us celebrate the power and strength of the coming together of our
community... Great works are within arms' reach,” said Pipersburgh.
